MANILA, Philippines - Chinese group tours to the Philippines that Beijing suspended in May in the wake of a diplomatic spat between the two countries over Panatag (Scarborough) Shoal have resumed.

Some Chinese tour companies announced the resumption of group tours on Friday, the day Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Fu Ying visited Manila and met with President Aquino.

Beijing imposed the travel ban that resulted in scores of tour agencies carrying Chinese tourists canceling group tours to the Philippines, where Boracay, Cebu and Bohol are the most popular destinations.

Travelers from mainland China are the fourth largest tourist arrivals in the Philippines, with 96,455 Chinese tourists visiting the country in the first quarter of 2012.

In May, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) reminded China that the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea) is not the sum total of bilateral relations and the Philippines remains a “safe” and a “welcoming” country even as tensions over disputed islands escalated.

The Chinese state media earlier reported that Chinese travel agencies suspended tourist packages to the Philippines and promised refunds to customers who have booked trips.
